Thomas F. Rosenbaum, the ninth president of the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), has announced that he will retire on June 30, 2026, concluding 12 years of leadership.

Rosenbaum, who assumed the role on July 1, 2014, will continue to serve at Caltech as a member of the faculty following his retirement.
During his tenure, Rosenbaum led the institution through significant academic and research advancements, earning respect for his contributions to both the scientific community and the Caltech campus. In 2023, he agreed to extend his presidency for part of a third term at the request of the Caltech Board of Trustees, with the understanding that he would step down at the end of the 2025-26 academic year.
As part of his transition, Rosenbaum’s announcement sets the stage for the search for the next president of Caltech. The Board of Trustees, in collaboration with the Institute’s faculty, will begin this process in earnest, with further details expected to be revealed next week.
Rosenbaum’s decision marks the conclusion of a transformative era at Caltech, as the institution now prepares for the next chapter in its storied history.
