Caltech Announces Two-Year Moratorium on SAT and ACT Requirements

In addition, alternative English Proficiency Testing will be available for international students.

      By News Desk

Applicable to all first-year students applying for Fall 2021 and Fall 2022, the Caltech decision recognizes the continuing impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on access to SAT and ACT exams for students across the country and the globe.

Caltech’s undergraduate admissions process has traditionally required that students submit SAT or ACT test scores. The Institute had already announced the elimination of the SAT Subject Test requirement in January 2020.

Jared Leadbetter, professor of environmental microbiology and chair of the freshman admissions committee, said:

We are facing, extraordinary times, and students’ pathways for college application preparation have been substantially disrupted. The events of the spring have impacted all prospective applicants. This is the time to show them as much support and compassion as we possibly can for matters that are entirely out of their control.

Caltech’s Undergraduate Admissions Office has updated its first-year admissions requirements to emphasize that increased attention will be paid to curriculum and academic preparedness in lieu of test results.

International students will also benefit from a change in English proficiency testing. These students now will have the option to meet the English proficiency requirement with either the TOEFL or the Duolingo English Test. In addition, applicants will not be asked to pay for the submission of any exam results until they decide to matriculate at Caltech.

Nikki Chun, director of undergraduate admissions, said:

Caltech is committed to access and equity, and we recognize our responsibility to amplify those values by ensuring that our programs are accessible to all qualified and interested applicants.

Can anyone tell me which university in the USA has the highest SAT scores: Cal Tech.

Can anyone tell me which university in the USA produces the most Nobel prize winners per capita by a factor of two: Cal Tech.

Is Caltech really dropping the SAT’s? No. Competitive students able to pull of that 1560 are still gonna take and submit that score and Caltech, with its tried-n’-true recipe will rank these students higher.

There ain’t no one who could pull of a 1560 that won’t somehow find a way to take this test and the universities know it.
