As delays in federal food assistance programs affect 5.5 million Californians, the state is stepping in to stabilize food distribution and ensure families don’t go hungry. Governor Gavin Newsom has announced an emergency initiative to fast-track $80 million in state funds to support food banks across the state and mitigate the impact of delayed CalFresh benefits.

The delay in the federal disbursement of CalFresh benefits, vital assistance for low-income families, has left many residents uncertain about how to meet their immediate nutritional needs. In response, Newsom’s administration is prioritizing the protection of food-insecure families by bolstering resources for food banks, which are critical to feeding vulnerable populations.
Governor Newsom has also deployed the California National Guard and California Volunteers to assist in the humanitarian effort. These personnel will support food banks in planning, packing, distributing, and delivering meals across the state, ensuring that those who rely on food assistance continue to receive essential support. This initiative echoes similar actions taken by Newsom during the COVID-19 pandemic, when the state mobilized volunteers and National Guard troops to distribute food to families in need.
The $80 million in state funding will help offset delays in federal assistance, stabilize food distribution, and ensure food banks can operate at full capacity. It will also alleviate pressure on local communities by providing additional resources for meal deliveries and emergency food packages.
State officials are encouraging residents to reach out to local food banks and community organizations for support and continue to access emergency food resources as they become available.

Let’s be clear. Independent food programs are not receiving this funding. Only large – already well funded – organizations like LA Regional. World Harvest World Harvest Food Bank which doesn’t play the USDA game feeds thousands of Angelenos a month and will get no support from this. Meanwhile they have been contacted by over 100 schools asking for support for families.
At the end of the day, both sides play politics off the backs of the most vulnerable and those selflessly doing the work the government fails to do get left in the dust.
