Assemblymember John Harabedian (D‑Pasadena), the only Armenian American currently serving in the Legislature, joined members of the California Armenian Legislative Caucus Foundation on Monday, April 20, for a remembrance luncheon recognizing the resilience and contributions of the Armenian community. The event marked more than a century since the Ottoman Empire’s systematic killing and displacement of over 1.5 million Armenians.
During the luncheon, Harabedian presented certificates to the Armenian National Committee of America and Glendale City Clerk Dr. Suzie Abajian, commending their continued advocacy on behalf of Armenian Americans.
Harabedian also introduced House Resolution 97, which formally acknowledges the atrocities of the Armenian Genocide and highlights the importance of recognizing early warning signs of systematic violence. The resolution passed the Assembly, designating April 24, 2026, as the Day of Commemoration of the 111th Anniversary of the Armenian Genocide.
“As an Armenian American and Chair of the Armenian Caucus, it is critically important that we formally recognize the historical reality of the Armenian Genocide and pay tribute to the 1.5 million Armenians who were murdered,” Harabedian said. He added that the anniversary is also a moment to honor “the strength, resilience, and unity of the Armenian diaspora in California and our many contributions to communities across the state.”
Beyond the Capitol, Harabedian’s office participated in local commemorations in Pasadena and Montebello, standing in solidarity with descendants of survivors and reaffirming the state’s role in preserving historical memory.
