A Brazilian actor inspired by a German poet on a Southern California stage may seem like an unlikely cultural convergence, but it is precisely this blend that defines One Million Words – Rilke, opening at Sierra Madre Playhouse this spring.

The production, created by and starring Ivo Müller, makes its North American premiere with six performances scheduled for April 24–26 and May 1–3, 2026. The solo show draws inspiration from the work of Rainer Maria Rilke, widely regarded as one of the most influential poets of the modern era.
Originally developed in Brazil, the play arrives in California during the centennial year of Rilke’s death (1875–1926). Following its U.S. run, the production is set to travel to the United Kingdom for a presentation at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.
In the performance, Müller inhabits two intertwined figures: a contemporary actor and a poet from the past. Through letters and introspection, the characters explore creativity, identity, and belonging in a rapidly changing world. The narrative centers on a writer who, after months of creative struggle, can only express himself through correspondence, letters that ultimately guide the actor as he grapples with his own sense of displacement in a foreign environment.
Directed by Arieta Corrêa, with Darrell Larson co-directing the English-language version, the production examines themes of love, artistic process, and the search for grounding in the present moment. These ideas, Müller suggests, are especially relevant in today’s climate.
“As we grapple with wars, violence, and the devastating impact of human suffering, Rilke’s words serve as an antidote to the chaos,” Müller said. “His ability to articulate the depths of human emotion provides a much-needed refuge.”
Opening night on April 24 will include additional programming, featuring a pre-show piano performance by Vicki Ray and a post-show discussion with both Ray and Müller.
An English-language version of the play was first workshopped in New York in 2025, followed by a second workshop in Los Angeles as part of a works-in-progress series shortly before its official premiere.
Rilke’s legacy looms large over the production. Known for reshaping lyrical poetry through innovative syntax and emotional depth, the Austrian writer explored themes of beauty, suffering, and the inner life. His reflections on melancholy as a source of creative clarity continue to resonate with contemporary audiences.
Müller, whose career spans theater and film across Brazil, Europe, and the United States, brings a wealth of experience to the role. His credits include collaborations with major studios and appearances in internationally recognized films, as well as extensive stage work ranging from classical to modern playwrights.
One Million Words – Rilke runs at Sierra Madre Playhouse, located at 87 West Sierra Madre Boulevard in Sierra Madre, California. Tickets range from $12 to $35.
