A new mural, “We are all built the same” will greet Pasadena High School students and staff when the 2021/2022 school year begins.
Class of 2022 artists Celeste Edell, Melanie Garcia, Elliot Nunez Alvarez, Lois Ann Slimp, Caroline Vasquez, Jennifer Vasquez, Matthew Vidal and Jazzmyn Viray were interns for Pasadena artist and lead teacher Alicia Gorecki.
In three weeks, the team of student artists took a blank wall from concept, to planning, to implementation and completion. The mural’s primary message, “We are all built the same” is illustrated with imagery of the skeletal spine and ribcage. Adorning the ribcage are LGBTQIA+ identity flags, painted as badges in a place of honor. The artists plan to encourage students to place their hand prints, with the flag colors of their identities or orientations, on the columns framing the mural.
If you would like to see the mural in person, when the campus opens again in August, stop by Pasadena High School, and head to the stairwell between H and I buildings.
Alicia Gorecki is the lead teacher for the Visual Arts and Design Academy at Pasadena High School and an active local Visual Artist with a studio practice.
