The Spring 2025 Graduate Art guest lecture series, organized by Jack Bankowsky, will feature Matthew Barney.

Best known for his feature-length cinematic works, including The Cremaster Cycle (1994-2002); River of Fundament (2014); and Redoubt (2019), Barney deploys sculpture, drawing, performance—and, in this newest work, both dance (contact improvisation) and clay—in physical installations that amplify and expand his cinematic world.
From his game-changing 1991 debut—the exhibition that found the athletic 24-year old scaling the walls of Soho’s Barbara Gladstone gallery clad in nothing but a climbing belt—to his now-fabled, five-part, six-hour Cremaster series, an ever-expanding complex of movies, sculptures, and photographs, culminating in a Guggenheim Museum solo at age of 35, Barney’s adventurous use of materials and appetite for Wagnerian spectacle has enthralled the artworld for more than three decades.
A frequent collaborator, Barney has worked with figures ranging from composer, Jonathan Bepler, to pop star Björk, to elder-statemen painter Alex Katz, and emerging empresario and artist, Jamian Juliano-Villani.
