Cwynar, known for her thought-provoking explorations of the power of images in contemporary culture, will deliver a lecture that is free and open to the public. RSVP’s are not required for the event.

Born in Vancouver, BC in 1985, Cwynar now resides and works in New York. Her practice revolves around an obsessive archiving of popular imagery, where she uses photography and, more recently, film, in immersive installations to examine the ways images shape and influence our lives. Cwynar’s work delves into questions about the creation, proliferation, and endurance of images—highlighting their seductive qualities and the often invisible power structures they perpetuate.

A graduate of Yale University’s MFA program, Cwynar also holds a BDes from York University in Toronto. Her impressive exhibition history includes recent solo shows such as Baby Blue Benzo at David Zwirner in New York and an upcoming solo exhibition at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston. Past projects include S/S 23 at Foam Photography Museum in Amsterdam (2023), Apple Red, Grass Green, Sky Blue at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles (2022), and Source at Remai Modern in Saskatoon (2021). Cwynar’s works are housed in notable collections, including The Museum of Modern Art in New York, Centre Pompidou in Paris, and the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa.

The Graduate Art Program at ArtCenter emphasizes rigorous studio practice alongside academic coursework, fostering a collaborative environment between students and faculty. This guest lecture series invites distinguished artists like Cwynar to share their expertise with students and the broader community.

The event is made possible through the generous support of Jack Shear, Brenda R. Potter, Brendan Dugan, Lisson Gallery, Beth Rudin DeWoody, Sprüth Magers, BLUM, Hannah Hoffman, Alan Hergott, and David Kordansky. See the full Spring 2025 seminar schedule here.
