On May 8, 2024, students at Altadena Arts Magnet kicked off the first Bike, Walk & Roll to School event in Altadena.

      By News Desk

Children, parents, school administrators, and community volunteers biked from the Altadena Library to school in the morning followed by a bike skills safety assembly. Over 40 people biked to school, including Altadena Town Council Representative and bike enthusiast Dorothy Wong. California Highway Patrol gave out free bike helmets and provided road safety support and training.

“Our first ever Bike to School event gave students the opportunity to explore their community by traveling to school on bikes,” said Altadena Arts Magnet Principal Dr. Dana Hill. “Students were able to see things they never paid attention to before. They learned street names that surround their school and enjoyed the fresh air and health benefits of biking. More importantly, they learned and practiced the rules of the road and how to properly navigate streets, crosswalks, and sidewalks when on a bike or scooter.”

      Upcoming Events

      • On Wednesday, May 15th, Rosebud Academy Charter School and Oak Knoll Montessori School students will bike, roll, and walk to school from Farnsworth Park with Altadena Town Council Representatives Nic Arnzen and Kim Yu.
      • On Thursday, May 16th, Odyssey Charter School North and Aveson Global Leadership Academy will organize an “Altadena Bike Bus” where students can ride their bikes with the “bus” as it picks up students on the way to school. May 16th is also Bike to Work Day.
      • Oak Knoll Montessori’s Lower Campus on Lake Avenue will organize a parent-led walk and bike event for preschoolers on May 22nd.

“Bike to School Day brings school officials, parents and children together to explore their community via bicycle or scooter and start thinking about using alternative means to move around their neighborhood,” says LA County Bicycle Advisory Committee Member and Altadena Resident Tom Reilly. “Los Angeles County is in the process of updating its Bicycle Master Plan which proposes increasing the number of bike lanes in Altadena to serve the growing bicycling community.”
