The Altadena Library District is buzzing with activity this week as staff and community partners finalize preparations for a highly anticipated groundbreaking ceremony scheduled for 10:00 am on Saturday, Feb. 28, 2026, at the Main Library on East Mariposa Street.

The event marks the official start of a major renovation of the beloved mid‑century modern building, a project expected to take approximately 14 to 18 months.
Local, county, and state leaders will gather to commemorate the library’s history and celebrate its next chapter. Scheduled speakers include U.S. Congresswoman Judy Chu, L.A. County Supervisor Kathryn Barger, California Senator Sasha Renée Pérez, Assemblymember John Harabedian, California State Librarian Greg Lucas, Altadena Town Council Chair Nic Arnzen, Altadena Heritage Chair Hans Allhoff, Principal Architect Mark Schoeman, Altadena Library District Board Trustee Dr. Katie Clark, and Altadena Library District Director Nikki Winslow.
Attendees will also have the opportunity to view architectural renderings of the renovation, offering a first look at the future of the Main Library as it undergoes its most significant transformation in decades.
In the lead-up to the ceremony, Altadenans are invited to visit the Friends of the Altadena Library sale, running from Wednesday, Feb. 18 through Saturday, Feb. 21, from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm at the Main Library. The sale features used books, furniture, craft supplies, and other items, with proceeds supporting library programs and services.
