Held at 4:30 pm on April 16, the event marked the official debut of the facility at 15 W. Alhambra Road in Alhambra. District leaders, staff, families, community members, and invited media gathered to commemorate the occasion and tour the campus.
The Scanlon Early Education Center represents a major milestone for AUSD’s early childhood and special education programs. What began in the 1980s as a small special education preschool housed in portable classrooms at Moor Field has evolved into a modern, purpose-built learning environment designed to better support students and families.
District officials emphasized that the new campus reflects AUSD’s ongoing commitment to expanding access to high-quality early education. Built on the site of the district’s former offices, it is the first brand-new campus constructed by AUSD since 2011.
Thursday’s celebration included an official ribbon-cutting ceremony, guided tours of classrooms and learning spaces, and opportunities to observe students and families engaging with the new environment. Attendees also heard remarks from district leaders, staff, elected officials, and other dignitaries. In addition to the speakers, there were also presentations of certificates from the offices of Congressmember Judy Chu, State Senator Sasha Renée Pérez, Assemblymember Mike Fong, and the City of Alhambra. Vice Mayor Adele Andrade-Stadler also spoke, and Mike Fong joined at the very end of the program to deliver remarks after arriving directly from the airport, having been in Sacramento earlier in the day.
The event featured a festive atmosphere, with balloons, decorations, and custom-made pins and cookies, as attendees celebrated the opening of the new campus.
