Alhambra Sewer System Test to Begin July 27

Alhambra has contracted National Plant Services (NPS) to conduct smoke tests as part of an on-going program to detect leaks and defects within the sewer system.

The work is anticipated to begin on July 27 and to be completed within two weeks. NPS crews will be working on the south side of Alhambra, from 8:00 am to 4:30 pm. The smoke that is being used is made specifically for this application and is non-toxic and non-staining.

The smoke that will be generated to conduct these tests should not enter the house if the plumbing is working properly and the traps are full of water.  Residents will see smoke coming from the vents of the roof of their home, which is normal. In most cases, entrance of smoke into a dwelling is through fixtures that are not routinely used; therefore, residents need to run water for a minute or two at each fixture to ensure that all traps are full of water.

If smoke does enter the house, residents should report it immediately to the crews conducting the tests in their neighborhood, who will do a quick inspection of the residence to locate the problem area in the plumbing. Opening of doors and windows should quickly dissipate any smoke. If you are not home and discover smoke when you return, simply open a few windows to vent the area.
