Officers with the Alhambra Police Department arrested a man following a brief vehicle pursuit near Garfield Avenue and Commonwealth Avenue after identifying a car reported stolen.

According to police, officers initially observed the suspect driving the stolen vehicle in the area. The driver pulled over briefly ahead of officers to allow a passenger to exit, reportedly stating she was not involved. When officers instructed him to turn off the vehicle, he instead fled, prompting a short pursuit.

The driver eventually pulled over and was taken into custody without further incident.

During a subsequent search of the vehicle, officers located hypodermic needles. The suspect admitted the needles were used for methamphetamine. Further investigation revealed the individual had been arrested just one day earlier for possession of a separate stolen vehicle.

When questioned about the current incident, the suspect told officers he found the vehicle running in a parking lot without a key in the ignition. He stated he took the car because he needed transportation and intended to return it later that evening.

Authorities identified the suspect as Jonathan Martinez, a resident of Bell Gardens. He was booked at Alhambra Police Department Jail on charges related to vehicle theft and possession of stolen property.

      The investigation remains ongoing.
