The corner of Garfield and Main has become a popular gathering location for residents of Alhambra and beyond.
By Melissa Michelson
Lacking a central town square where people can come out of their homes to enjoy the fresh summer evenings, many have started gathering in front of the movie theater in the historic core of Alhambra.
Kids play with their remote-controlled toy cars, passersby sit on the mosaic benches, and skateboarders whizz by. The non-profit community group San Gabriel Valley Neighbors for Peace and Justice, which has been a regular sight for at least 20 years, raises awareness for different causes like ending war, releasing journalists, or animal rights. The large plaza in front of the movie theater serves as a convenient outdoor space for families and friends to gather, and it’s a central meet-up spot for restaurant-goers.
The corner of Garfield and Main on Friday evenings is a place where the community can get involved and get to know each other.

From the sign in the photo, folks use this space to protest everything.
It’s essentially a town square.
About 11 years ago the Spanish news station ran a story on this space too. It was about all the Nannie’s who took care of infants for moms that work. This is a stroll destination for the Nannie’s – or so our Nannie explained why she and our baby were on TV news. 😉
I went there a few times after we invaded Iraq…
