The Alhambra City Council has voted to place a measure on the November ballot that would permanently prohibit data centers throughout the city.

The proposal follows the council’s earlier adoption of an ordinance banning new data centers as part of a local zoning code update, reflecting broader regional efforts to limit the development of energy-intensive facilities. City officials noted, however, that the current ordinance could be repealed or amended by a future City Council.
If approved by voters, the ballot measure would amend the Alhambra City Charter to make the prohibition permanent. Any future effort to allow data centers or modify the ban would require voter approval rather than action by the City Council alone.
The proposed charter amendment is brief, incorporating the city’s existing definition of “data center” and adding a single provision: “Data Centers are prohibited in all zones of the City.”
The council approved the measure during a special meeting Tuesday, July 14, 2026, beginning at 5;00 pm in the Council Chambers at Alhambra City Hall, 111 S. First St.
The measure will appear on the November ballot for Alhambra voters.
