Alan Chapman Returns for Six-Week Summer Masters Series at Pasadena Senior Center

Summer is a perfect time to soak up new knowledge, and Pasadena Senior Center has the ideal guide for exploring the world of classical music.

Masters Series favorite and KUSC classical radio host Alan Chapman will share his encyclopedic knowledge of music through multimedia presentations during the six-week Alan Chapman LIVE Summer Masters Series. The series begins Tuesday, June 30, and continues on consecutive Tuesdays through August 4, from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm at the Pasadena Senior Center.

Now in his 42nd year as a valued contributor to the Center’s Masters Series, Chapman will kick off this year’s program with a brand-new installment of his Musical Alphabet, a potpourri of musical topics. Along the way, he’ll shine a spotlight on Giuseppe Verdi, composer of La Traviata and Aida, and Claude Debussy, widely considered the father of musical Impressionism. He’ll also take audiences on musical journeys to the North and the South.

Tuition for all six lectures is $90 for members and $108 for non-members. Individual lecture tickets are available for $18 for members and $20 for non-members. The lectures will be presented in person and will not be recorded. Reservations are recommended, and tickets will also be available at the door.

The six-week Masters Series schedule includes:

• June 30: Musical Alphabet – Episode 13
• July 7: Look to the North
• July 14: The Operas of Verdi
• July 21: Look to the South
• July 28: Musical Alphabet – Episode 14
• August 4: Debussy

Alan Chapman has enjoyed a multifaceted career in music, serving as a college professor, popular pre-concert lecturer, radio host, and performer. He earned a Ph.D. in music theory from Yale University, and his impressive résumé includes performances of both classical works and his own original compositions at Carnegie Hall, Town Hall, and Lincoln Center.

In the past decade, Chapman developed the “Music 101” series for the Los Angeles Philharmonic, where it continues to thrive. Music is a family affair for Chapman as well. In 2019, he and his family performed as the Von Chaps during a 19-concert tour of China.
