Assemblymember John Harabedian announced Friday, Sept. 18, that Arroyos & Foothills Conservancy (AFC) is set to receive $3.575 million in state funding to help acquire and protect four wildlife-habitat properties in the San Gabriel and Crescenta valleys.

The announcement came during AFC’s second annual Urban Conservation Awards, an event recognizing efforts to preserve natural areas in the region.

The funding was included in Assembly Bill 113, a budget measure that provides money for environmental protection and wildlife conservation projects across California. The allocation will be administered through the California Wildlife Conservation Board.

AFC plans to use the funding to pursue the acquisition of four properties in Altadena, Glendale and Shadow Hills. If acquired, the properties would be placed under permanent protection to preserve habitat for wildlife and native ecosystems.

Harabedian, Assemblymember Mike Fong, D-Alhambra, and Assemblymember Nick Schultz, D-Burbank, supported including the funding in the legislation.

“I hope this is just the beginning of long-term, robust support for urban conservation in our community,” Harabedian said. “I’m proud to champion state funding for wildlife and open space because protecting our environment matters now more than ever.”

The properties are among the remaining open spaces in the San Gabriel and Crescenta valleys, where development has reduced wildlife habitat and native ecosystems.
