Hilary, the powerful Category 4 hurricane, is expected to weaken to a tropical storm hitting the Los Angeles area on Sunday night.

A tropical storm watch, the first in California’s history, has been issued, from Friday, Aug. 18, 2023 to Sunday, Aug. 20, 2023. It will span the Mexico/California border up to Orange County and Los Angeles.
Heavy rainfall and flash flooding will become more likely over parts of the Southwest, according to the National Weather Service.

Hillary will begin to increase thunderstorm coverage across portions of the Southwest today, with heavy rainfall and flash flooding possible. As Hillary continues to track north in the eastern Pacific near Baja California, the threat for heavy rainfall and flash flooding is likely to increase on Saturday, especially for portions of Southern California, western Arizona, and southern Nevada. With the increase in cloud cover, temperatures will return to more seasonal values today before dropping below normal across much of Southern California and the Great Basin over the weekend.

The worst of the rain will hit the inland deserts and mountains on Sunday. 2 to 6 inches of rain are expected, with some areas potentially seeing up to 10 inches of rain.
