Why travel to South America to see the first total solar eclipse?
By Events Manager
Go to Altadena to see the first total solar eclipse since the Great American Eclipse in 2017!
A solar eclipse occurs when the shadow cast by the Moon fully or partially blocks the Sun. This summer, NASA reports that the solar eclipse will happen on July 2 over parts of South America.
Altadena is not directly under the moon’s shadow, but if you are not planning to fly to South America, the Altadena Public Library will be hosting a live stream of the Total Summer Eclipse in the FabLab. The live stream will happen all day, but the actual total eclipse will occur from 12:55pm to 2:50pm.
History
The word eclipse comes from the ancient Greek word ekleipsis, meaning failing to appear. The Greeks feared the menacing sight, even making peace during wars occurring at the time of an eclipse.
Altadenans and visitors can watch this natural phenomenon with a sense of wonder. There is no need to bring special glasses, but a sense of camaraderie is more than welcome.
