The model train layout at the Christmas Tree Lane Model Train Society showcases the entire west coast route of the now-defunct Carson & Colorado Narrow Gauge Railroad. The display highlights the geography, topography, and history of the Pacific West as developed by this important rail line.

Rob Caves, owner and operator of the multi-level, multi-gauge railroad layout, has created a truly impressive model that features miles and miles of track! Along the way, visitors will find both familiar locations, like downtown Los Angeles, and more obscure ones, such as the Sacramento grade. The level of detail is extraordinary, from the water features and cities to the deserts, bridges, small towns, lumber mills, and the infrastructure needed to operate trains traveling the route between San Diego, CA, and Seattle, WA.
In addition to the many scenic elements, the layout is packed with hidden “Easter eggs,” including a model of the Mars Rover and Mount Rushmore, complete with Star Trek figures! Stacked five levels high, the layout may feature over 35 miles of track within its 6,400-square-foot space.
For those who prefer to avoid the crowds and focus on the finer details, the Christmas Tree Lane Model Train Society, located at 2085 Santa Rosa Ave. in Altadena, will be open to the public every Saturday from November 29, 2025, through January 3, 2026. Admission is free, and hours are from 5:00 to 11:00 pm.
