A 2017 ranking, done by Niche, assessed 3,229 private high schools in the nation and came out with a Best Private High Schools ranking.

The 2017 ranking is based on rigorous analysis of key statistics and millions of reviews from students and parents. Ranking factors also include SAT/ACT scores, the quality of colleges that students consider, student-teacher ratio, private school ratings, and more. Data sourced from the U.S. Department of Education, Niche users, and the schools directly.
Three local private high schools (two from Pasadena and one from La Canada) stood out in the national ranking:
- Polytechnic School: With a $34,800 yearly tuition, close to 868 students in grades K-12, and 9:1 student-teacher ratio, Poly ranked 2nd in Los Angeles, 5th in CA, and 12th in the nation (20th in 2015).
- Westridge School: A private all-girls school in Pasadena with a $33,550 yearly tuition, 500 students in grades 4-12, and 8:1 student-teacher ratio, Westridge came in 8th in Los Angeles, 17th in CA, and 67th in the nation (93rd in 2015).
- Flintridge Preparatory School: A private school in La Canada Flintridge with a $34,200 tuition, 500 students in grades 7-12, and 7:1 student-teacher ratio, Prep ranked 3rd in Los Angeles, 8th in CA and 24th in the nation.
Other local private high schools made the list as well (noted in italics).
