On September 3rd, 2024, Los Angeles Dysautonomia Network (LADN) opened applications for its 2024 grant program, which was created to help cover dysautonomia healthcare expenses (not covered by insurance) for low-income patients. Dysautonomia is an umbrella term that refers to disorders of the autonomic nervous system, which regulates automatic body processes such as heart rate, blood pressure, digestion, and blood vessel dilation/constriction. LADN, a nonprofit that serves dysautonomia patients and caregivers across the state of California, has seen a large increase in its patient community over the past year, in part due to the high incidence of dysautonomia related to long COVID. LADN provides a range of services to its members in addition to the grant program, including support groups, wellness workshops, and patient education programs.
In September 2023, the organization distributed $500 grants to 12 recipients. “This year, we are so thrilled to be able to increase our grant funding to $10,000 and award $1,000 grants to ten individual recipients,” said LADN Executive Director Sally Krueger-Wyman.
LADN’s grants cover dysautonomia-related healthcare expenses not covered by insurance, including co-pays, prescription costs, insurance premiums, mobility aids, psychotherapy, physical/occupational therapy, and more. Those who wish to find more information or to apply can do so at la-dn.org/grant-program. “LADN’s grants are a lifeline for many,” stated Emily Suñez, LADN’s Outreach Director.
“There aren’t other local organizations that are providing direct financial assistance to this patient community. It’s only thanks to the support of our donors that LADN is able to provide crucial financial support to those burdened with the immense financial strain of this disabling illness.” LADN provides a range of services to its members, including support groups, wellness workshops, and patient education programs. (Those who wish to make a tax-deductible donation to support the grant program can do so on LADN’s website.)
Grant applications for individuals are open from September 3rd through October 14th, 2024, and the application can be accessed here. Applicants must be California residents, have a dysautonomia diagnosis, demonstrate financial need, and provide documentation of dysautonomia-related medical expenses. LADN will be holding a virtual Grant Application Workshop on Monday, September 16th, 5:00-6:00 pm, to walk applicants through the grant program requirements and application process.
Los Angeles Dysautonomia Network (LADN) is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization supporting Californians impacted by the health condition dysautonomia through community, education, and financial support.
