They swim in backyard pools, enjoy a snack, and climb trees in communities along the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains. American Black Bears (Ursus americanus) are captured throughout the summer in photos and video roaming through neighborhoods and down trash lined streets and are often the lead story on the nightly news.
The Sierra Club Forest Committee presents “The Urban Black Bear,” a program by Kim Bosell on bears that are second and third generation, born and raised within city limits. These opportunistic creatures are mastering the technique of living with humans.
A social reception at 7 p.m. precedes the 7:30 program sponsored by the Sierra Club Angeles Chapter’s Forest Committee. Free.
Kim Bosell is the Natural Areas Administrator for the Los Angeles County Department of Parks and Recreation. She spent three years with the California Department of Fish and Game as a scientific aide on an urban bear study that trapped and radio-collared bears. Kim was tasked with tracking the bears to determine how much time the bears were spending in urban areas, what they were eating and where they were sleeping while there. Later she worked for the City of Monrovia Parks and Police department handling all black bear and mountain lion calls and running a Bear-Be-Gone Program for five years.
